Labour Weekend saw Hottie lifeguards again in action at the Whitianga Bathtub Races.
Antz, Millie, Jazard, Conner and Andrew provided event safety with 2 irbs on the course, entertained the crowds with some pick ups and an irb race, Conner and Jazard even managed our first rescue of the season. Highlight was Antz laying down smoke for the Westpac Rescue helicopter to fly in and do a water pick up on Millie.
Callum and Hayley competed in borrowed tubs and despite very little practise did the club proud. Andrew took line honours in the final “celebrity race”.
A big thank you to Keith Finch from Whitianga Hardwear for the loan of a tub,Rob Davis of rdp Panel & Paint for the loan of a tub and for donating his prize of a brand new Century Marine Pro battery to the club, also to John Booker of Pacific Coast Marine and Diesel who donated his prize money from the Open event, and to Callum who won a brand new VHF radio which he also donated to the club.
Also to Sue, Sharon, Jean and Ted who did a marvelous job raising more funds cooking up mussel fritters for the spectators.
The event raised money for the Westpac Helicopter, Whitianga Coastguard and Hot Water Beach of which Hottie received $500.
Perhaps next year Hottie will have their own tubs competing, any takers?

Winter IRB Training kicked off at Tairua on Saturday of Queens Birthday Weekend. Hottie Guards that attended were, Andrew Oliver, Callum Oliver, Josh McMurtrie, Jim Donnell, Hayley Betteridge and Thomas O’Connell. Nonstop rain, 2 metre waves and shore dump did not deter our guards from participating in this training exercise.
Due to the sea conditions, the Sunday session was held at Pauanui and ended with an 8 boat game of IRB soccer.
For any further winter IRB training please contact Andrew Oliver on 021 275 1367.
